Patients¡¯ Preoperative Knowledge, Anxiety and Attitudes about Anesthesia

Abstract

|
Purpose: It is essential to provide patients and their guardians with detailed explanation regarding anesthesia given to the patients, thereby reducing the anesthesia-associated anxiety. This survey was conducted to record the patients¡¯ and guardians¡¯ knowledge, anxiety and attitudes about anesthesia to be used in decreasing preoperative anxiety and postanesthetic care in out-patient day surgery center.
Materials and Methods: The questionnaire consisting of 17 fixed questions (Table 1) was answered by 67 patients scheduled for elective day surgery and their 75 guardians in Chungbuk National University Hospital Day Surgery Center. Each question was divided into three answer choices depending upon their knowledge and concern about anesthesia ((1) Never informed or concerned (2) Moderately informed or concerned (3) Greatly informed or concerned). They were asked to take one of the three choices.
Results: More than 70% of the patients and guardians responded that they were ¡°(2) Moderately informed or concerned¡± and ¡°(3) Greatly informed or concerned.¡±in nearly all of the questions.
Conclusion: Similar levels of anesthesia-related information and concern were shown in each question among
patients and guardians.
